Why is My Water Meter Running?

You have been enjoying the occasional sun and warmth that has been hitting California and doing some gardening. The last time you went out to do some watering in your garden though, you noticed that your water meter seemed to be even more eager to get things wet than you are. By this, we mean that even after your hose is turned off, your water meter is still happily running on its own.

It’s springtime so it isn’t really the season for spooky things, but if this occurrence seems concerning to you, you can rest assured that your reaction is appropriate. Why? Because a water meter that is running on its own is a sign that you have a problem with your plumbing in Ontario, CA and you should reach out to a team of professionals for assistance in getting the issue diagnosed and resolved.

What Causes a Running Water Meter?

If your water meter is running, it isn’t without reason. A running water meter is going to be caused by something–the question is if that cause is a good or bad one. When your water meter is running without a regular reason such as you using your faucet, it could be caused by something like:

  • Leaking pipes: Whether it is a pinhole leak or a slab leak, having a leaking pipe or two will cause your water meter to run as it creates a continuous flow of water in your home. This, of course, is bad for your home and bad for your water bills and can be addressed by a professional.
  • Leaky plumbing appliances: A leaky faucet or a dripping showerhead may not seem like a big deal–until it shows up on your water bill. When your plumbing appliances are leaking water it adds up because it keeps your water meter running and runs up your tab!
  • Toilet leaks: Your water meter may also run because of a leak in your toilet. This can show up in a few ways. Either you have a leak in your toilet tank, a leaky part between your tank and your bowl, or a leak in the drain under your toilet. Whatever the source of the toilet leak, it will cost you.
