What’s That Smell? It Could Be a Clogged Drain

water-down-drainNo one wants to smell the things that they flushed down the kitchen sink or one of their bathroom drains after it is out of sight. There are times though that these nasty scents seem to come back up the drain to haunt the house.

When this stinky event occurs you may wonder why. Do you need to clean your sink or toilet more often? The truth is that you likely have buildup forming in your drain, which can lead to a clog.

A clogged drain may sound like an easy fix but it is really something that needs to be addressed by a professional plumber. This is for the sake of the safety of your plumbing and we will explain why.

No one enjoys having a clogged drain in their kitchen or bathroom. We doubt that anyone enjoys trying to get rid of the clog either because let’s be honest it can be a pain if your first try doesn’t work out.

If you aren’t sure if it is time to call in a plumber for a potential clog, we want to give you the tools to make the necessary diagnosis and understand why it only benefits you to avoid the liquid drain cleaners.

Signs of a Clogged Drain

Clogs can form in your kitchen or bathroom drains when hair, food, grease or other debris combine to stop water from draining properly. Some signs that will tell you that you have a clog on your hands include:

  • Bad odors: Like we said above, that sewer smell is likely being caused by a backed-up drain. The smell is created by the built-up gunk allowing bacteria to collect, grow and release that gross stench.
  • Slow Drainage or No Drainage: If your shower creates a puddle that drains slowly or not at all when you use it, or your kitchen sink does the same, it is a sign you have something blocking the flow of water.
  • A Gurgling Noise: This may be a noise that you write off as being normal for a drain in your kitchen or bathroom. The truth is though that a gurgling noise is one that should tell you there is build-up somewhere in the drain that water is having to struggle to bypass.

Dealing with Clogs

So, you’ve got a clogged drain. Why not just reach for the drain cleaning liquid right? There is actually a good reason not to do this. Aside from the fact that the fumes from these liquids are detrimental to human health, they are also caustic and can easily damage your drains.

Your best options for dealing with clogged drains include dealing with them via a plunger or a drain snake. Better yet, you can call a professional plumber who will have the ability to diagnose the issue and provide quick and effective drain cleaning in Ontario, CA.

If you have a drain or two that are having trouble doing their job, make sure you reach out to a plumber sooner than later. They will be able to clear the clog and clean your drains to help avoid another clog occurring early on. In fact, regular drain cleaning circumvents clogging incidents altogether!
