One of the important jobs that we offer for both our residential and commercial clients is drain cleaning. Just last week we wrote about how preventive drain cleaning is an excellent way to start off the New Year for your plumbing. It keeps away clogs and gives the drains the best opportunity for a trouble-free year.
How drains become clogged in the first place
- Fats, oils, and grease: These cooking products (collectively known to plumbers as FOG) are the major enemy of kitchen drains. They appear harmless when in hot, liquid form. But when they cool, they change into a waxy solid that will build up on drain walls and lead to easy clogging issues. Try to keep as much FOG from your drains as possible by pouring it into a separate receptacle that goes to the trash.
- Hair: This is the major enemy of bathroom drains, and shower and tub drains in particular. Hair can become stuck in the p-trap of a drain (the curved pipe section just under the drain opening) and turn into an obstinate tangle that stops other debris as well. These hair clogs usually need professionals to clear them away.
- Soap scum: Common to both the kitchen and the bathroom, soap scum is hard to avoid. It’s one of the main reasons to have routine drain cleaning. Aside from creating potential clogs, soap scum can cause chemical damage to the drainpipe walls.
- Accidental objects: Sometimes the source of a clog is just an object—like a child’s toy or the lid of a medicine bottle—that got knocked down the drain by accident. (This is one reason why preventive drain cleaning can’t stop all) Just give our team a call and we’ll take care of the problem.
